How We Test and Rate Every Companion App

It's been a busy week at CYG. Our team of 4 — reviewers, testers, writers, whatever you want to call us — has been deep in the trenches exploring some of the most popular AI companion apps out there.

Since we've spent so much time with these apps, we figured why not pull back the curtain and show you exactly how we test them and what we're judging them on.

So let's get to it.

Conversation Quality

Every app's core product is conversation. Yet they're all so different. So here's the question — what's the most important thing about any relationship?

Memory.

Think about it. Imagine meeting your girlfriend at a coffee shop and she doesn't remember your name. That's what makes human relationships special — we remember each other's things. Birthdays, favorite foods, that one embarrassing story from college.

The same applies here. With millions of people now using these apps — the ai girlfriend statistics are honestly wild — conversation quality is what separates the good ones from the forgettable ones. If she doesn't remember you, what's the point?

After a lot of back and forth, our team agreed on the five things that matter most when it comes to conversation:

  • Memory — Does she remember what you told her yesterday? Last week? Your dog's name?
  • Context — Can she follow the flow of a conversation without getting lost or repeating herself?
  • User Persona — Does she actually feel like a distinct person with her own personality, or just a generic chatbot?
  • Response Length — Are replies too short and robotic, or do they feel natural and thoughtful?
  • Emotional Range — Can she pick up on your mood? Does she react differently when you're happy vs. venting about a bad day?

Image Generation

This one matters more than people think. When you've been chatting with a companion for hours, you want her to send pictures — and those pictures need to actually look like the character you're talking to. Nothing breaks the illusion faster than a face that looks completely different from one image to the next.

And let's be real — how bold those images are also plays a big role in whether users stick with a particular app or not.

Here's what we look at:

  • Realism — Do the images look like actual photos or obviously AI-generated?
  • Character Consistency — Does she look the same across multiple images? Same face, same features.
  • Pose Control — Can you request specific poses and actually get what you asked for?
  • Outfit Selection — How much variety is there? Can you customize what she's wearing?
  • Speed — How long does it take to generate an image? Seconds or minutes?

What's Next

We haven't touched video generation or group chat features yet, but that's on our list for next week.

This post isn't a one-and-done thing. As we test more apps and dig into more features, we'll keep updating it. Our reviews are only as good as the process behind them, and we want that process to be completely open. If you think we're missing something or want us to test a specific app, let us know — we're building this for you, not just for us.
